The S in ESG: A missed opportunity (?)

This module explores the “S” in ESG—social responsibility—and how it is often overlooked compared to environmental and governance dimensions. It examines how organizations interact with employees, customers, suppliers, and communities, raising the question of how to measure and report on social impact effectively. Participants will analyze key challenges in accounting and finance workplaces, especially concerning gender inequality, burnout, and the limited progress for women despite supportive practices. Case studies reveal structural issues such as women being confined to cost-centre roles, hypocritical wellbeing policies, and persistent cultural barriers. The module also highlights how heteronormativity and masculine stereotypes shape professional norms, often marginalizing LGBTQ+ identities. Through queer perspectives, learners will be encouraged to reimagine accounting as a more inclusive and socially just profession, moving from reactive compliance toward proactive cultural change. By the end of the module, participants will understand how embedding genuine diversity, equity, and inclusion in the “S” dimension of ESG can disrupt existing power structures and generate long-term value for organizations and society.
